Description
The Elephant Man is based on the life of Joseph Carey Merrick, a Victorian-era man whose struggle with Proteus syndrome made him a public fascination. Born in Leicester, England, in 1862, Merrick faced hardship, rejection, and exploitation before finding an unlikely ally in surgeon Frederick Treves. Their remarkable relationship would ultimately help Merrick find friendship, and place to belong, making his story a powerful exploration of humanity and compassion.
Note
At 17 years of age, he was sought out by his uncle where he was offered a place to stay and shortly thereafter started making a living in a nearby workhouse. Sam Torr would be contacted by his uncle proposing that Joseph be put on display in a freak show in town where he would be named the Elephant man. As he travelled, he encountered a chance meeting with a surgeon named Frederick Treves. It was Treves who would choose to study Joseph and later offer him a place to live at the London hospital for the rest of his life. Sadly, Merrick died on April 11, 1890, of a dislocated neck.
