Show InfoThe Elephant Man is based on the life of Joseph Carey Merrick and his struggle with Proteus syndrome, which was conjectured in 1986. Born August 5, 1862, in Leicester England. Merrick’s physical deformities began at the age of 5. His mother died when he was 11 years old. He began working at his father’s haberdashery rolling cigars, until his physical limitations prompted him to begin selling door to door. His face was so disfigured he was viewed as behemoth; Therefore, he could not make any sales. Beaten and rejected by his father, he made the decision to leave home.
