| Notes | When The Thunder Comes will be performed as a workshop-style developmental production, focusing on the story and the music. We are also looking for a stage manager, as well as musicians (a pianist, guitarist, drummer, and cellist). |
| Instructions | Please prepare a monologue of two minutes or less, and prepare 16-32 bars of a song (either Broadway or pop). | Show Info | When The Thunder Comes is an original play with music. The show consists of a series of monologues and songs performed by people from the New Testament who each have a distinct reaction after encountering Jesus face-to-face. This will be a workshop-style production, focusing on the characters and story. |

| Role | M/F | Age | Description | SHEPHERD | M | 17-25 | ending his flock of sheep when angels appear to announce the birth of Jesus. | MELCHIOR | M | 40-50 | Melchior is one of the Three Wise Men – astrologers – who see a star that they conclude is a prediction that a new King of the Jews is to be born, and then travel to visit the child. | PETER | M | 25-35 | Peter, a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee, is one of the first disciples called by Jesus. Jesus convinces Peter to go out on the sea and then brings about a miraculous haul of fish. Later, Peter becomes the leader of the disciples who form the Christian church. | NICODEMUS | M | 40-60 | icodemus is a Pharisee who – unlike many other Pharisees -- is genuinely interested in what Jesus says. He comes to Jesus by night and has a conversation in which Jesus says that those who would enter the kingdom of God must be “born from above.†Nicodemus is initially confused, because he’s taking what Jesus says literally, but Jesus explains that being born from above is a spiritual process. | WOMAN AT THE WELL | F | 40-65 | A Samaritan woman who has led a colorful life When she meets Jesus, he tells her details of her life that no stranger could possibly have known – including the fact that she has had five husbands. She believes that Jesus is the Messiah, and spreads the word among the others in her village. | THE CENTURION | M | 40-50 | The Centurion is a rough-edged soldier. He asks Jesus to heal his servant, who has been ill, and tells Jesus that he need not come to the Centurion’s house, because if Jesus merely speaks a word of healing from a distance, the servant will be made well. | THE WOMAN CAUGHT IN ADULTERY | F | 20-35 | A young woman who has been caught in the act of adultery. She is terrified, because the temple authorities who have apprehended her want to stone her to death. Jesus stops them by saying: “Let he among you who is without sin cast the first stone. | ZACCHAEUS | M | 45-50 | A tax collector who is hated by his fellow Jews because he collaborates with the Romans who are occupying Palestine in order to enrich himself. He is short, and has to climb a tree in order to catch a glimpse of Jesus, who orders him to come down so that he can dine at Zacchaeus’s house. He then reforms, promising to restore money to those he has defrauded. | PONTIUS PILATE | M | 49-50 | Pilate is the Roman governor of Judea; the temple authorities bring Jesus before him, asking for him to be crucified. Pilate resists the calls to have Jesus killed, but ultimately gives in to the pressure brought by the crowds and orders that Jesus be crucified. | MARY MAGDALENE | F | 25-35 | A young woman who has been healed by Jesus, who cast out a demon from her; thereafter, she follows Jesus and supports his ministry. She is the first person to see Jesus after He has been resurrected from the dead. | PAUL | M | 30-35 | Originally named Saul. Saul was a Pharisee who initially opposed and persecuted the early Christian church; as he is on his way to Damascus to arrest Christians there, Jesus appears to him and he becomes a Christian convert. Later, adopting the name Paul, he travels throughout the Mediterranean basin, founding Christian churches and writing letters to advise them on spiritual matters. |
