Roles
Role | M/F | Age | Description | BENEDICK | M/F | 20-40 | An accomplished soldier who is rather high on himself. Consistently in a war of insults with Beatrice, they nevertheless have some underlying affection for each other, which thanks to manipulation from friends, will be brought about in full bloom. He hides himself behind his own pride and dissuades others from acting out of pure desire, but is quick to fall into it the moment that him and Beatrice fall for each other. Character will share a kiss with Beatrice, and simulate hitting Claudio. | BEATRICE | M/F | 20-40 | The governor's niece, she is smart beyond her years and has no problem showing it, especially when it comes to her insults towards Benedick. She too, however, has some form of feelings towards him, which she will be tricked by her friends into accepting as well. She is sharp witted and cynical, but at the same time, can be vulnerable, as she despairs on Hero's behalf when she is slandered, and not as close minded as most of the others who quickly turn their backs on Hero. Character will share a kiss with Benedick. | CLAUDIO | M/F | 20-30 | A young count of Florence who is hopelessly in love with the governor's daughter, Hero. He is overly passionate in his desires but can also be too quick to judge and believe other people when he obviously shouldn't. He is one of Don Pedro's closest friends thanks to his brave deeds fighting under him, and thus, Don Pedro believes him and helps him without question. Character will share a kiss with Hero and simulate being hit by Benedick. | DON PEDRO | M/F | 20-40 | The prince of Aragon who has just returned to Messina after thwarting his brother's overthrow. He leads the charge to trick Benedick and Beatrice into admitting their love for each other. However, while he has his friend's best interests at heart, he shares his brother's gifts for manipulation and trickery, and goes out of his way to do things that are rather unnecessary at times, possibly due to his own power that he was born with, and thus unquestionable. What he says goes, even if is misled (which he inevitably will be) | DON JOHN: | 0 | THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST | HERO | M/F | 20-30 | The governor's daughter who returns Claudio's affections. She prides herself as well on being a good person in the eyes of her father, and hates the thought of disappointing him. She is also Beatrice's best friend, in addition to her cousin. Character will share a kiss with Claudio, simulate being hit by Leonato, and simulate hitting Don John. | LEONATO | M/F | 40-70 | The Governor of Messina, second in power only to Don Pedro. He loves his family dearly and openly supports not only the marriage of Claudio and Hero, but also Don Pedro's plot to bring Benedick and Beatrice together. However, like Claudio, he is too quick to believe people and becomes furious when he believes his daughter may have been unfaithful, unwilling to listen even a little to her own side. Character will simulate hitting his daughter, Hero. | DOGBERRY | M/F | 20-50 | The constable in charge of the Night's Watch, and the closest thing to the police chief in Messina. How he received this post is unknown, as while he takes his job seriously, he also has a habit of using the wrong word when talking about it. He also takes insults very personally and takes haste in making sure everyone is reminded of the insults he received. | VERGES | M/F | 20-30 | Dogberry's deputy, who has an absolute adoration of him, and would follow him to the ends of the earth. | BORACHIO | M/F | 20-40 | One of Don John's most trusted allies. He and Margaret are lovers, something Borachio will use to his advantage to deceive Claudio and Don Pedro. Borachio acts much more openly like a scoundrel than Conrade, a fact he is rather proud of. Character will simulate making out with Margaret. | CONRADE | M/F | 18-40 | The other of Don John's trusted allies. He puts on a more dignified demeanor to dissuade suspicion, but is just as much of a wicked person as Don John and Borachio, and is addicted to the thrill of making others miserable. | URSULA | M/F | 18-60 | One of Hero's waiting-gentlewoman attendants | MARGARET | M/F | 20-50 | One of Hero's waiting-gentlewoman attendants, she will be tricked by Borachio, and thus be an unwitting pawn in Don John's plan to cause misery to everyone. Character will simulate making out with Borachio. | ANTONIO | M/F | 40-70 | Leonato's brother and Hero's uncle, also the father of Beatrice. He is more open to reason and not as quick to judge as his brother. | BALTHASAR | M/F | 20-40 | A waiting man in Leonato's house as well as a musician. He assists in the plot to bring Beatrice and Benedick together. Character will be required to sing at least one song during the show. | THE WATCH | M/F | 18-30 | A few volunteers who work for Dogberry. While they are not overly intelligent, they are competent, as they ultimately help uncover Don John's plot. | FRIAR FRANCIS | M/F | 30-50 | The officiate of Claudio and Hero's wedding, who convinces Leonato to open his mind and trust his daughter, and creates a plot determined to prove | A SEXTON | M/F | 40-70 | An official who makes a record of Dogberry's interrogation. A competent man who grows tired of Dogberry's bizarre behavior. | VARIOUS MESSENGERS AND ATTENDANTS | M/F | 0+ |
