InstructionsPlease bring possible rehearsal and/or performance conflicts to the auditions. Please prepare a 16 – 32 bar cut of a musical theatre song either from the show or in a similar style. An accompanist will be provided. There will be a dance audition following the vocal auditions. Please wear clothes comfortable for dancing as well as sneakers.

Show InfoThe 1950s are out, and change is in the air! Hairspray, winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, is a family-friendly musical, piled bouffant-high with laughter, romance and deliriously tuneful songs. It's 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen, Tracy Turnblad, has only one desire – to dance on the popular "Corny Collins Show." When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob, Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network...all without denting her 'do!

Edna TurnbladF40-50Male to play Female, White, 40-50. Tracy's mother – sincere and honest. 60's Baltimore housewife, larger-than-life character actor with strong singing ability. Exceptional acting and comic timing a must. Simple dance/movement required.

Penny PingletonF16-18Female, White, plays teen-aged. Tracy's best friend and dorky sidekick. Not the brightest girl, but she has good intentions. Bursting to get free of her mother's dominating control, she falls for Seaweed with childlike curiosity. Seeking an actress with a great sense of comedic timing. Strong high belt, contemporary theatre/pop voice. Good movement/dance skills necessary.

Link LarkinM16-18Male, White, plays teen-aged. The star heartthrob on Corny Collins' show. He is extremely attractive and talented. Hoping to get his big break with a recording contract, he unexpectedly falls for Tracy. Strong pop singer and excellent dancer. High bari-tenor with strong falsetto.

Seaweed J. StubbsM16-18Male, Black, plays teen-aged. Tracy's classmate and friend, who is discriminated against due to his skin color. Cool, sexy, street smart and good-hearted. He falls for Penny. Great actor with excellent, soulful pop voice. Must be a fantastic dancer.

Amber Von TussleF16-18Female, White, plays teen-aged. Link's girlfriend and Tracy's nemesis. She is pretty, popular, shallow, snobby, and racist. Seeking an excellent actress, vocalist and dancer. Strong high pop/musical theatre belt and superb dance skills required.

Velma Von TussleF35-50Female, White, 35-50. Amber's mother and the director of Corny Collins' show. She is a devious taskmaster and snobby racist. The former Miss Baltimore Crabs will go to any length to ensure her daughter is the next big thing. Requires an excellent strong belt/mix and devious beauty queen poise as simple dance/movement required.

Motormouth MaybelleF40-50Female, Black, should play 40-50. Seaweed and Little Inez's mother. Queen of Baltimore soul, a radio DJ. Powerful and inspiring with an infectious, brassy personality. Excellent actress with ability to convey depth and light-heartedness. Soulful, gospel pop voice with high belt required. Minimal movement required.

Wilbur TurnbladM40-55Male, White, 40-55. Tracy's father. Sweet, goofy, childlike personality. He owns a joke shop and supports his daughter in spite of everything else. He also loves his wife, Edna, very much. Excellent comedic timing and simple dance skills required.
