Show InfoLobby Hero is a play by Kenneth Lonergan about a young security guard, Jeff, who becomes entangled in a murder investigation with his boss, William and a veteran and rookie police officer, Bill and Dawn respectively. Set in a Manhattan apartment building lobby, the narrative explores themes of loyalty, integrity, and justice as the characters' secrets and personas are revealed. The play uses dark humor to examine the conflict between principles and emotions under pressure, questioning the nature of heroism and the gray areas of morality.

Roles

RoleM/FAgeDescription
JeffM20-30Mid 20s - A well-meaning but talkative security guard, Jeff is affable, awkward, and desperate to prove himself as more than a screw-up. He masks insecurity with humor and chatter, often oversharing. Though somewhat aimless and immature, he has a genuine desire to do right and connect with people. Needs strong comedic timing paired with vulnerability.
WilliamM27-40(MUST be African American) Mid 30's - Jeff’s supervisor, a disciplined, principled Black man with a commanding presence. William takes his job seriously and expects the same from others. He wrestles with loyalty to family versus duty to the law, and his inner conflict drives much of the play’s tension. Actors should bring authority, moral weight, and emotional depth.
DawnF20-30Mid-20s - A rookie cop, Dawn is determined to prove herself in a male-dominated profession. She is tough, ambitious, and deeply committed to earning respect on the force. At the same time, she struggles with self-doubt and vulnerability beneath her armor. Actors should balance confidence, grit, and emotional openness.
BillM30-40Mid-30s - Dawn’s training officer, Bill is charming, confident, and manipulative. He knows how to use his authority, charm, and swagger to get what he wants, especially from women. Outwardly smooth and in control, but his abuse of power and moral compromises reveal a darker edge. Actor must exude charisma while carrying underlying menace.
